Shimla is a region in the Himalayan foothills. The orchards there grow the fruit on small plots of flat land or terraces, several thousand feet above sea level. Shimla produces a wide range of apples, from the globally-familiar red and golden delicious, to royal delicious, red gold, and other Indian varieties. Shimla apples are the king of apples in Indian and international markets. Shimla apples come with many different varieties. Their sizes and shapes vary. The skin of Shimla apples are glossy and smooth. They come in different hues such as red, green, yellow, and orange. The flavors range from sweet to tart. Some apples are aromatic and some have mild flavor. The flesh, depending on the variety, can be firm, pale yellow to cream-colored, juicy, crunchy, or crisp. Shimla apples are a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, flavonoids, and antioxidants. Since apples have phyto-nutrients, antioxidants and dietary fibre, their regular consumption reduces the risks of heart diseases, cancer, diabetes and stroke. They can also prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neuro disorders.
