Kunnam or Yelakki Banana is one of the most commonly cultivated commercial bananas especially in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It grows as a dark green fruit but turns golden yellow as it ripens. Thanks to its high fragrance, it gets its name Yelakki, which is also the name of cardamom in many Indian languages. The name also denotes Yelakki’s small size. It is powdery and firm compared to other bananas. It has a thin skin. They have the same flavor as regular bananas but are a little sweeter. Yelakki is preferred for desserts. The raw ones are prepared into many savoury dishes. Despite their small size, they have the same nutritional value as the regular bananas. However, Yelakki bananas are low in calories. These small bananas are rich in Vitamin C and full of potassium which makes it an ideal post-workout snack. They are convenient and tasty but they are also high on carbohydrates – the good ones. Locally produced elaichi bananas tend to be more nutritious and delicious too. Bananas have serotonin that helps induce sleep.
